SNAP! After School Auditions

Stax Music Academy (SMA) exists to nurture and present the next generation of great Soul Communicators from the greater Soulsville region, holistically equipping them to excel and to impact the world through the universal language of music. SMA is currently seeking experienced VOCALISTS and INSTRUMENTALISTS, 6th-12th grade. We also have a dynamic Audio & Studio Engineering coarse for musicians AND non-musicians, 6th-12th grade!

SNAP! AFTER SCHOOL (SAS): VOCALISTS & INSTRUMENTALISTS

  • Dates of Participation: Sept. 2016 – May, 2017
  • Days of the Week: (2 days per week; days are based upon ensemble schedule)
  • Tuition: $1,000*

AUDIO ENGINEERING & MUSIC PRODUCTION: NON-Musicians & Musicians

  • Dates of Participation: Sept. 2016 – May, 2017
  • Days of the Week: (3 days per week)
  • Read the attached “Audio Engineering” Course Description
  • Tuition: $1,000 (some students may be enrolled in both the Music Program & Audio Engineering Course for only one flat fee)
*SMA offers families the option of applying for the Soul Children Scholarship, a financial need-based scholarship that may reduce the cost of student tuition by a minimum of 20% up to a maximum 80% (based upon eligibility). Students may apply for merit-based scholarships by submitting an essay based upon criteria which will be included in the enrollment packet if the student is accepted into the program.

REQUIREMENTS TO AUDITION:

1. Student must possess a passion for music.

2. Student must have some experience singing/playing an instrument.

3. Student must be willing and capable of committing his/her time, hard work, and musical ability to the program.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE AUDITION PROCESS:

  • SMA Registrar, Ms. Robinson, will contact parents with an audition time slot after students have registered to audition. If you do not receive a call within 24 hours of registration, please call Ms. Robinson at 901-946-2535 ext. 250.
  • Audition time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Auditions will only be scheduled after you REGISTER ONLINE!
  • Space in the after school program is limited!

 

MUSIC AUDITION PREPARATION

ALL STUDENTS must be prepared to: PERFORM 2 SONGS which showcase both your talent and diversity (preferably 2 very different types of music, or at the very least 1 fast, and one 1 slow song) RAP IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR AUDITIONS.

EXAMPLES:

  • INSTRUMENTALISTS –
    • Classical (varying styles) or a ballad (staccato vs. legato)
    • Jazz Selection; or R&B (various genres)
  • VOCALISTS – Classical; Spiritual or Inspirational; R&B; Country or Jazz

AUDITIONS

  • Unless you are performing a cappella (without instrumental or other background music), please bring sheet music, or a music track for the song you will perform,
    • A pianist will also be on site to accompany you if needed.
    • ANSWER BASIC MUSIC THEORY QUESTIONS, for example:
      • Construct major scales in at least two keys
      • Construct minor scales in at least two keys
    • Construct a major triad, etc.
    • It is desired (preferred––but not required) for student to be able to read music––or at the very least show an enthusiastic willingness to learn to read music. If student is accepted, she/he will be taught to read music.
  • STUDENT NEEDS TO BRING:
    • Your instrument (unless you are a vocalist, in which case your voice is your instrument)! Stax will provide keyboards, amplifiers and drums

Be mindful, the music directors will only listen to enough of the song to make an assessment – (may not listen to entire length of song).
